Thijs Kauffmann, Triptych, Cibachrome prints, Sunset in the west, 2008

Thijs Kauffmann

Thijs Kauffmann's works reflect the world surrounding him. He examines the possibilities and conventions of different techniques and materials by experimenting with new forms and ideas through painting, film, photography, and sculpture.

Kauffmann's artworks are inspired by both rural and urban nature. He partly resides in Kovikshamn, Sweden, and partly in Amsterdam. As for someone who is used to living in a city, Kovikshamn produces a sense of relief from its space and the freedom nature offers. It stimulates the senses and increases consciousness. In this rural environment, reflections and ideas naturally arise. Kauffman sees the perfection in the structures of rocks and in the composition of pine needles that have fallen to the ground. There seems to be a natural logic as if they could not have been otherwise.

The sunset is another recurring topic in his work. It started with the idea of filming the sun without a lens in front of the camera. In 2007, he travelled to the west coast of Morocco to make the 16mm film "Sunset in the West." The light falls directly on the celluloid by removing the lens from the body during filming. What you see is an abstract representation of the sunset, a monochrome image that fades from white to black through the red colour spectrum. Horizontal stripes alternate in the painting 'Katwijk' (2020). The imprint of the ridges on the beach is created by the ripples of the water. The colour combination represents the moment of the sunset.

Kauffmann's artworks reflect a fine balance between city and country life through his original outlook.

Thijs Kauffmann lives and works in Kovikshamn and in Amsterdam.
