Cactus, flower, kiss & clouds

The work of Maaike Schoorel challenges the viewer’s ability to interpret what they see. By looking carefully and spending time with her canvas’ the apparently monochrome surfaces reveal themselves to be being made up of layers of colored paint that describes faint landscapes, figures and still lifes. For her solo show at Stigter van Doesburg, Schoorel made this time a series based on flowers and plants, mostly taken from the Hortus botanicus in Amsterdam. She treats cacti and other specimen as subtle as the human beings present in her other paintings.
