Joie Noire - Block Universe, London, UK

Block Universe is London’s leading international performance art festival and commissioning body. We bring together cutting-edge performance art at the cross-section of contemporary visual art, dance and music. Held in major institutions and venues across London, previous partners include The Store X 180 The Strand, the ICA, Sadler’s Wells, Royal Academy of Arts, the British Museum, Somerset House and The Showroom amongst other unique offsite locations.

The festival has produced over   57   productions,   27 new commissions and brought 14 international premieres to London over the past 5 years with the mission to create a long-term, sustained engagement with performance art in the city. In pioneering this new platform, Block Universe aims to position London at the forefront of the dialogue surrounding performance internationally. In 2019, the festival held its fifth edition, from 18 May to 2 June in London and 14 September in Germany for the launch of E-WERK Luckenwalde, a new institution near Berlin.

Block Universe was founded in 2015 by Louise O’Kelly, and the team includes Katharina Worf, Curator & Director of International Programme; Xica Aires, Head of Production and Tatjana Damm, Managing Director. This year we are grateful for the support of our team members Sofia Irene Schorling and Sara Muthi, as well as our Art Fund supported trainees.
